Dr. Tony Bennett, Indiana Superintendent of
Instruction announced today Mrs. Melanie Park, the Huntington County
Community School Corporation 2011 Teacher of the Year, has been
named the 2012 Indiana State Teacher of the Year. This announcement
was delivered personally by Dr. Bennett at a Riverview Middle School
assembly with her family and students present.
As a top three finalist, Mrs. Park attended an interview in Indianapolis as
part of the teacher selection process; Dr. Bennett, interviewed Mrs. Park
and his representatives visited her classroom in Huntington as well. Mrs.
Park is a Reading Specialist Teacher at Riverview Middle School.
In describing Mrs. Park, Superintendent of Huntington Schools Mr.
Tracey Shafer commented, “The Huntington County Community School
Corporation is extremely proud of Melanie Park. She exemplifies great
teachers and great teaching in Huntington and across the State of
Indiana. She views herself as an academic trainer whose primary
mission is to relate, motivate and differentiate instruction for her
students. She has an exceptional ability to achieve this mission by using
her life experiences and learned abilities as a professional educator to
connect with the learning needs of her students. Her sincere desire and
ability to help children succeed sets her apart as a classroom teacher”
Riverview Middle School Principal, Mr. Curt Crago reflects on Mrs.
Park, “She not only ignites the power of reading that students have
within themselves, but moves deeper to include writing and other schoolwide
initiatives. I marvel at her creativity, enthusiasm, energy, and
commitment to young lives.”
Mrs. Park has also served the students of Huntington County as a Middle
School Team Teacher and Project Challenge Teacher.
