Huntington Mayor Updike and local County Commissioners have declared June 25-July 1 as Marching Vikes week. The HNHS Marching Vikes and boosters will be canvasing the city of Huntington between 6 and 9 PM on June 28 and 29. County canvasing will coour beginning on June 25 and will continue to July 1 and beyond. The purpose of canvassing the county is to help raise funds.
The Huntington North Band Parents & Boosters’ Organization is devoted to providing support services and financial support to the Marching Vikes as well as all of the H.N.H.S. band programs. The organization has historically provided substantial economic support to these programs and has shared, or borne the costs of many of the substantial purchases made for these bands. Examples:
Rebuilt the instrument storage areas in 2010/11 year at no cost to schools
Provide food for student musicians at all contest events past, present, future at no cost to schools
Provide prop construction, logistics, costume design sewing, equipment transport/ field placement
Assist in funding summer / fall extra staffing for contest and marching to alleviate cost to schools
Provide extra funds for band camp to avoid additional cost to school.
Arrange for and ensure funding for Disney trips. NO SCHOOL CORP. FUNDING is used for this!
Last spring the need for new uniforms for our band became very apparent to our organization. Uniforms being well in excess of their life expectancy (well in excess of ten years old); these
present uniforms are failing in mass with on the field occurrences of embarrassing splits and tears. Band members have started wearing full coverage black undergarments so splits & tears are less obvious.
The organization had put back about ¼ ($10,000) of the funds required to purchase new uniforms, and were proceeding to raise an additional ¼ ($10,000) in anticipation of the school corporation providing the remaining ½ ($20,000) as had occurred in past uniform replacements.
As a result of the current budget situation the corporation’s contribution was not possible. Instead, the School Board voted to loan the funds to the Band Parents Organization. (About $30,000)
Due to the deplorable condition of the current uniforms and our desire to support our youth, the Band Parents’ and Boosters have accepted the loan and now we are redoubling our efforts in order to raise twice the funds and thereby ensure that our obligation to the school corporation is met. While we have a maximum of 3 years to repay, we are painfully aware of the budget situation and want to repay in full this year.
