On Monday 4/11/2011 Huntington Metro Kiwanis recognized Riverview’s outstanding 8th graders who were select by the Riverview School’s Staff for their individuals accomplishments and who excelled in scholarship, citizenship, sportsmanship, character-building activities, extra-curricular achievement and leadership. Curt Crago principal at Riverview attended the meeting and dinner honoring the outstanding students. Mr. Crago thanked Metro Kiwanis for recognition of the students and the parents and teachers who have played a terrific role in the lives of each student. Mr. Crago spoke about the outstanding students as special people that are a shining example to others in the community and at Riverview. Mr. Crago talked how it is a difficult time today for teachers and students, but that change is a good thing. He encouraged each recipient to maintain the attitude to go above and beyond by going the extra mile.
Mr. Crago talked about Riverview that is a school that is in partnership with parents and staff that is always looking for different and better ways to educate the students at Riverview to prepare them to be at the fore front for the future and the challenge of keeping a balance of new technology trends and old school to make students well rounded in their education and experiences. Mr. Crago expressed how proud he was of the staff and kids at Riverview and thanked Metro Kiwanis for recognizing a positive of the school and community.
Mr. Crago then introduced Kristen Dyson daughter of Roger and Debbie Dyson and Jordon Hersey son of Debbie Hersey as the outstanding 8th graders of Riverview.
Kristen Dyson thanked her parents for supporting her, Huntington Metro Kiwanis and Riverview faculty for the award. Kristen as been focused on her studies while being involved in his church’s youth group, student council, academic super bowl, campus life, student leaders, peer tutoring, dance, basketball softball and 4H. Kristen is looking forward to attending HNHS, but is not sure what she wants to study. She is going to do some engineering this summer and depending on how that goes may be the direction she chooses. Kristen again thanked Metro Kiwanis for the honor and recognition as outstanding 8th grader. She is currently undecided on a major and college at this time.
Jordon Hersey introduced his mother and grandparents Ed and Joan Robbins. He thanked the Huntington Metro Kiwanis and Riverview faculty for the award. Jordon has a love for music and participated in a production of guys and dolls at Riverview. He has been involved in band, choir, musicals swimming and basketball. Jordon where he is looking forward to playing basketball as it is his favorite sport. He has a love for music and after singing in guys and dolls production feels that he would like a career in that profession. Jordon again thanked the Huntington Metro Kiwanis for honor and recognition as outstanding 8th grader. Jordon is currently undecided as to a major and college at this time.
Each student received a plaque and will also have his or her name engraved on the outstanding student plaque that was made by Huntington Metro Kiwanis member Jim Dinius. The plague is displayed in a prominent place in the school. Congratulations to each student on being outstanding 8th grader.
