The motto of Optimist International is “Friend of Youth”. In keeping with this motto, the Huntington Optimist club has designated its Optimist Youth Appreciation Award to recognize a few of the outstanding young people in our community. The Youth appreciation Award is awarded to two students from each of the Huntington County Middle Schools and three students from Huntington North High School who demonstrates outstanding dedication and service to their school, the community and its citizens.
The students from Riverview that have received the March award are Alaina Ellenburg and Daniel Jacobs. Alaina is the daughter of Morris and Danielle Ellenburg. She participants in the following activities at Riverview and at her church - Christmas City Chorus, Riverview Jazz Band, Praise Team, church girls group and youth group, piano lessons, guitar lessons, Riverview Singers, Star Spangled Banner singer, vocal ISSMA – 3 years, band ISSMA – 1 year, National Junior Honor Society, church choir, and “Annie Jr.”
The staff members at Riverview commented that she is a lovely, vibrant, talented, Christian young lady who challenges herself beyond her skills of which she has many. A very accomplished percussionist and singer, she shares her gifts within and without the school. She is full of compassion and quick to lend a hand to others, listen to those in need of counsel, willing to work hard, and laughs at a good joke.
Daniel is the son of Rodney and Patty Jacobs. He participants in the following activities at Riverview and at his church - Football, Track, Basketball, church youth group and youth group leader, Campus Life, and Student Leaders. Dan will also be participating in a mission’s trip this summer to Los Angeles where he will witness to inner-city teens who are surrounded by violence, drugs, homelessness, and hunger on a daily basis. The staff members at Riverview commented that he is exemplary both academically and personally. He is a conscientious student who consistently completes not only what is required, but who does more than what is asked. Dan takes responsibility for his learning and is a highly-motivated, high-achieving student. In addition, Dan deserves recognition for his solid character. He is a leader who works well with and is liked by everyone. He has a great sense of humor, is very creative, and is a young man of tremendous integrity. He is very helpful, caring, polite, and hard working. Not only is Dan a top student at school, but he is a leader outside the classroom as well through his involvement in sports, Campus Life, and his church.
