Kiwanis Recognizes Salamonie Students

On Monday 2/28/2011 Huntington Metro Kiwanis recognized Salamonie’s  outstanding 8th graders who were selected by the Salamonie School’s 8th grade staff for each individuals accomplishments and who excelled in scholarship, citizenship, sportsmanship, character-building activities, extra-curricular achievement and leadership. Assistant principal Lynn Brown at Salamonie attended the meeting and dinner honoring the outstanding students. Mrs. Brown spoke about the outstanding students as special people that are a shining example to others in the community and at Salamonie.  

 

Mrs. Brown then introduced Walter Hacker son of Mike and Sandy Hacker of rural Huntington and Mari Lane daughter of Charles and Anette Lane of Huntington as the outstanding 8th graders of Salamonie.

 

          Walter Hacker introduced his parents, sister Cassie and thanked the Huntington Metro Kiwanis and Salamonie faculty for the award. Walter has actively participated in many extracurricular school activities that include Cross Country, Blue Racers swim team and track. Walter enjoys the spirited competition and meeting of individuals who enjoy running and swimming as much as he does. Other extracurricular activities include playing of the baritone horn in the Salamonie Band, Swimming with the Huntington/Wells Otters as a state level participant. Walter has maintained a straight A average and represented Salamonie in this year’s county spelling bee. Walter is involved at his church helping with Operation Back Yard and Senior Pak. He has also participated in 4-H community service projects- including game day/ice cream socials at Heritage Pointe. Other 4-H projects include weather, woodworking, genealogy and photography. Walter’s weather and genealogy projects have gone to the state fair a few times. He also has participated in the 4-H Round-up program at Purdue this past summer. Walter said he is looking forward to challenges at HNHS and pursuing an Academic Honors diploma. Walter plans on participating in Cross Country, Swimming and track while attending HNHS. After graduation of high school  he is planning on attending Purdue University to major in mechanical engineering with a dream job of being a roller coaster designer.

 

 

 

Mari Lane introduced her parents and sister. Mari also thanked the Huntington Metro Kiwanis and Salamonie faculty for the award of outstanding female student of the year. Mari enjoys the subjects of social studies and mathematics. She also enjoys cooking and preparing meals for her family.  Her hobbies include scrapbooking, playing and taking care of her pets. Mari is looking forward to attending HNHS and the challenges of math and social studies. She plans on attending college, but is undecided as to the school where she plans on studying for being a teacher, engineer or possibly a doctor like her mother. Mari again thanked the Metro Kiwanis for this honor and award.

 

Each student received a plaque and will have his or her name engraved on the outstanding student plaque that was made by Huntington Metro Kiwanis member Jim Dinius. The plague is displayed in a prominent place in the school. Congratulations to each student on being outstanding 8th grader.

 

Huntington police officer Dave Jackson was guest speaker for the evening. He encouraged the honorees to be involved in studies and extracurricular activities at the high school. Officer Jackson advised the recipients to enjoy their high school experience as it will be over before they know it.
