The Steuben County fugitive wanted for murder, and who led Steuben County police on a chase into the state of Ohio yesterday was apprehended this afternoon in Fort Wayne after the vehicle he was traveling in tried to outrun police yet again.

At approximately 2:30 pm, investigators from the Indiana State Police post in Fort Wayne received information that Zao Garth Burrell, 24 from Angola, Indiana was at a residence in the 600 block of Ridgewood Drive in Fort Wayne.  Investigators contacted authorities in Allen County for assistance in locating both the residence and Burrell.

At approximately 4:00 pm, Burrell was spotted getting into a vehicle and as police attempted to make a traffic stop, the vehicle sped off in an attempt to elude capture.  The short pursuit ended in the Scott’s parking lot on N. Clinton near Coliseum Boulevard.  Three people from inside the vehicle, including Burrell were taken into custody by deputies from the Allen County Sheriff Department.  A handgun was reportedly thrown from the vehicle not far from where the apprehension took place and it was taken as evidence by State Police investigators.

Burrell was taken to the Allen County Jail where investigators from the State Police are working on getting his custody transferred to them so as to transport him back to Steuben County on the murder warrant that had been issued for him.  Agencies involved today included the Allen County Sheriff and Fort Wayne Police Departments as well as the FBI Safe Streets Task Force.
