On Friday, the Huntington County TEA Party held its US Congressional Debate at the Awakening Church at 251 Hauenstein Road in Huntington. Five US Senatorial and eight US Representative candidates dueled it out on stage to win the hearts and minds of the audiences of around 600 voters. In the Straw poll for the US Senate, Howe, Indiana resident, Marlin Stutzman, won the contest with 99 votes with Richard Behney second and Dan Coats coming in third. In the Straw poll for the US House of Representatives, Andy Lyons received over 45% of the votes with Mike Murphy, Brose McVey and Luke Messer coming in second, third and fourth respectively. For full Straw poll results, see below.

Submitted by Cindy Gamrat - The Huntington TEA party hosted a very successful U.S. Candidate debate on Friday March 26th. Most of the Congressional Candidates attended, and all of the Senatorial Candidates attended. Local Doctor Tom Ringenberg was the Master of Ceremonies and started off the night with a joint appearance by Huntington's very own "Sarah Palin". Air-force veteran and Moderator Emery McClendon was introduced, and the debate with the Congressional candidates was quickly underway. Due to the amount of candidates who filed for these races, each candidate had one minute to answer the questions with a one minute rebuttal, intro, and closing. Many questions were submitted and ranged from government involvement in health care to illegal immigration and the role of the United Nations. At the end of the night, a straw poll showed that one candidate made quite a favorable impression with the crowd of nearly 600. U.S. Congressional Candidate Andy Lyons (Grant County economics and history teacher) ran away with more votes than the next 3 candidates combined. See the results for the Congressional race.
After the Congressional race, the Senatorial candidates took the stage. Many questions submitted from the audience, and some from the TEA party were asked and answered. Questions focused on immigration, health care, priorities, the 2nd amendment, the economy, government subsidies, and of course government spending as well as others. The straw poll results for this group were a little closer together without huge margins between each placement. They were: Marlin Stutzman-99, Richard Behney-68, Dan Coats-54, Don Bates Jr.-44, and John Hostettler-30. Although these gentlemen are all Republicans, they each have different personalities and approaches to the issues . If you did not attend the debate, we will be posting video footage of the candidates as soon as we are able at http://www.huntington-tea-party.info. Our next debate will be with State Senate and State Congressional candidates on April 16th from 7-9 at the Awakening CC. We encourage you to look further at these candidates and vote in the primary on May 4th.
The Huntington TEA Party would like to thank all the candidates and citizens who came out to the U.S. Congressional Debate. Without all of you and countless volunteers, this would not have been possible. It is our hope that when people go into the ballot box to cast their vote, they will know the candidates behind the names. We have had a lot of positive feedback regarding the candidates and the debate. We estimated close to 600 in attendance. Great job candidates! Standing for Freedom in 2010!

Concerned citizen posted on March 28th, 2010 @ 16:32:11I believe this was a very good opportunity for the PEOPLE to come out and really hear what the candidates had to say. It was a well attended event, but I would have loved to see 3,000-4,000 people there, instead of 300-400.
Dan Harman posted on March 28th, 2010 @ 22:25:18The Huntington County Tea Party did a tremendous job organizing and promoting the Congressional and US Senate Debates. Both debates were "fair and balanced" with Emery McClendon as the moderator. It is extremely disappointing that the national mainstream media cannot report these positive efforts by the Tea Party movement. The mainstream media is only looking for ways to discredit the movement by reporting vandalism, violence, bigotry and racism and attributing them to the Tea Party.
Congratulations to the Huntington Tea Party and everyone that contributed to produce an outstanding event!
