Huntington, IN – The 12th annual “Old-Fashioned Independence Day Celebration” will be held at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010. The program will feature music by the Erie Band, Company Singers, and the Children’s Choir Summer Camp. Popular community actors David and Diana Dean will portray the first mayor of Huntington, Dr. Abel M. Lewis and his second wife-to-be, Lavina Smith in a representation of the first celebration of Independence Day as an incorporated town. In addition to the Deans, Melanie Lisinicchia will play the part of the mayor’s daughter Catherine, and Isaac Albertson will appear as a young boy from the town. Pioneer Joseph Nuck (Charles Hayden) and Clerk Joseph Wiley (Matt Stephenson) will also take part in the historical reenactment. Following the program, the public is invited to enjoy free watermelon slices and tour the historic buildings on the property.
Two Huntington museums are collaborating to recreate a slice of life in 1848 during the Independence Day program. The Forks of the Wabash is one of the actual sites where the Native American and European cultures met. The park includes restored buildings from the mid-nineteenth century depicting the lifestyle of the Miami Indians and the early settlers. The Huntington County Historical Museum traces life in the county from prehistory up to the 21st century. Visitors to the museum can learn about culture, business and industry, transportation and school athletics. Representatives from both museums combined information to create the reenactment of Huntington County’s Independence Day celebration of 1848.
The Erie Band will present a brief concert of patriotic music prior to the program, which is scheduled for 10:00-11:00 a.m. The buildings at the Forks will be open from 11:00 until 1:00 p.m. There is no entrance fee for the event, although donations will be accepted. It is recommended that those attending bring folding chairs or blanket since seating is limited.
The Forks of the Wabash Historic Park is located at the intersection of US 24 and SR 9 on the west side of Huntington, IN. Additional contact info is: Marie Harell, Forks of the Wabash Historic Park, (260) 356-1903 or Pat Bergdall, Huntington County Historical Museum,(260) 356-1173.
