UW Pacesetter campaign kicks off

The United Way Pacesetter campaign kicked offed Wednesday, July 14 at Hier’s Park. While freshly-grilled hamburgers and hot dogs were served, representatives of eight local businesses set out to start building excitement for the 2010 Huntington County United Way campaign. They will begin the process of collecting contributions that will help fund agencies serving Huntington County residents.

The Pacesetter companies, who will “set the pace” for the community-wide United Way campaign, were treated to hamburgers and hot dogs. The meal was grilled by Huntington County Community Schools Food Services Director Tom Lentes during the mid-day picnic. Those in attendance went back to their workplaces to run campaigns in advance of the general campaign in hopes of inspiring an increased level of giving.

The goal for this year’s campaign is $725,000, up $25,000 from last year.

“We feel very confident we’re going to meet that goal,” said Tracey Shafer, Huntington County Community Schools Corporation Superintendent and chairman of the 2010 United Way campaign.

Shafer noted that last year’s campaign ended with a fundraising total of more than the $700,000 goal. According to literature handed out during the picnic, 85 percent of the money raised goes to programs that have an impact on the community, while 15 percent goes to administrative costs.
