The Huntington County 4-H Shooting Sports program begins on Sunday, February 5 with the first classroom meeting for the 4-H Pistol discipline from 2:00-4:30 pm in the Family Living Building, Hier’s Park, Huntington.  4-H members interested in taking the pistol classes and their parents must complete the necessary enrollment forms and pay the $20 registration fee and the $15 state 4-H Program fee no later than the February 5th classroom meeting.  Payments may be made at the County Extension Office prior to the Sunday class or with the 4-H Shooting Sports leader at the beginning of the 1st class.

        Other 4-H Shooting Sports discipline classroom meetings include:

        Rifle – Tuesday, February 14, 6-8:00 pm, Family Living Building, Hier’s Park, Huntington

       Shotgun – Wednesday, March 7, 6-8 pm, Family Living Building, Hier’s Park, Huntington

        Archery – Wednesday, March 21, 6-8 pm, 4-H Community Building, Hier’s Park

        Muzzleloader – mid-April

      The 4-H Shooting Sports program is designed to teach safe use of archery and firearm equipment while helping youth grow in a variety of life skills.  There is a $20 registration fee for each discipline which must be paid at the time of enrollment, along with the $15 4-H program fee.  The 4-H program fee is a one-time fee, regardless of enrollment in multiple 4-H clubs or shooting sports disciplines.  Shooting Sports leaders and the Extension Office have copies of the necessary enrollment forms and forms must be completed no later than the first scheduled meeting of each respective discipline.

     Last year, White Tails Unlimited provided $1,000 to the county 4-H Shooting Sports program which benefited the archery, pistol, rifle and shotgun disciplines through the purchase of equipment and supplies.  The Flint Springs Chapter also contributed funds to support the program.

     All 4-H Shooting sports classes are under the direction of 4-H adult volunteers who have been certified through the State 4-H Shooting Sports program and Purdue University.  Goals of this 4-H program include:

-          Promoting the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior, including sound decision making;

-          Teaching safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment, self-discipline and concentration;

-          Strengthening families through participation in lifelong recreational activities;

-          Enhancing the development of self-concept, character and personal growth through safe, educational and socially acceptable involvement in shooting activities;

-          Encouraging responsible, self-directed and productive members of society;

-          Encouraging participation in natural resources and related natural science programs by exposing participants to the content through shooting, hunting and related activities;
