The Huntington County Extension Office currently has applications available for five local 4-H scholarships. Huntington County 4-H members who are eligible may stop by the Purdue Extension – Huntington County Office to pick up an application or may request the applications via email. Applications must be received no later than May 31, 2009.
1) Janell Marie Saunders Memorial ($1,000) – open to a current high school senior or Huntington County 4-H alumni who completed their final year of 4-H within the past two years. Applicants need to be pursuing post high school studies in the area of nursing or a health/medical related field.
2) Ray Vanderspool Memorial ($1,000) – applicants must be a current high school senior. Selection criteria include 4-H member record, community involvement and academic record.
3) County 4-H Swine and 4-H Beef Scholarships ($500 each) –applicants must be enrolled in the 4-H swine or the 4-H beef project for a minimum of 5 years, with 4-H record and school/community activities considered in the selection process.
4) Huntington County 4-H (2 scholarships @ $500 each) – open to a current high school senior or Huntington County 4-H alumni who completed their final year of 4-H within the past two years. These scholarships will be presented during the 4-H Fair in July at Hier’s Park.

4-H Sheep & Goat Identification Days set for Saturday, May 1
Identification days for Huntington County 4-H Sheep & Goat members will be held on Saturday morning, May 1 at Hier’s Park.
Youth enrolled in the 4-H Goat project will need to bring market goats to the goat pavilion (pole building immediately south of the Show Arena) between the hours of 7:30 – 10:00 am for identification and weighing of the animals. Members with breeding does or pet care entries must complete the enrollment paperwork but do not have to bring the animals to the fairgrounds.
4-H Sheep members must bring their market lambs and any non-registered ewe lamb or yearlings to the cattle barns between the hours of 7:30 – 10:00 am for the identification process and weighing for entry.
Youth planning to exhibit in the 4-H Goat or 4-H Sheep Shows at the Indiana State Fair must also have their market goats, sheep market lambs and sheep breeding females identified with electronic ear tags, provided through the County Extension Office.
Animal enrollment forms and specific details about the identification days were mailed directly to 4-H sheep and goat members. Members need to contact the Purdue Extension – Huntington County office if they have not received these forms in the mail.

Pork Quality Assurance workshops scheduled.
The Huntington County Extension Office announces the Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA+) workshop for 4-H Swine members for the 2010 4-H program year. The workshop will be offered on Monday, May 3 and Tuesday, May 4 from 7:00-8:30 pm at the 4-H Community Building, Hier’s Park. Youth must be certified in the PQA+ program to be eligible to sell in the 4-H Fair Livestock Swine Auction in July. Youth in their first year of the 4-H swine project and those individuals who have not passed a certification test, administered by the County Extension Office, must attend this annual workshop. Youth only need to attend one of the two scheduled evening workshops.
At the workshop, information about the ten good production practices will be explained and discussed. All youth raising swine must be knowledgeable about these production practices as they work with their 4-H swine project animals.
4-H members need to register no later than Monday, May 3 at 3 pm for this workshop to ensure sufficient copies of educational materials are available and may do so via email to ebrundig@purdue.edu, or phone at 260-358-4826 the Purdue Extension – Huntington County Office.
