On Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to about 12:00 p.m., up to 50 volunteers with Huntington County Habitat for Humanity will be participating in A Brush With Kindness. They will be raking yards, cutting brush, putting up siding, installing a railing – in general making minor repairs to the outside of homes belonging to low-income and disabled homeowners in Huntington.
A Brush With Kindness (ABWK) was developed by Habitat International as an avenue for local Habitat affiliates to address neighborhood housing issues. In addition to providing opportunities for affordable homeownership to low-income families, Habitat is involved with neighborhood revitalization.
A Brush With Kindness is offered to homeowners wanting to keep up their homes, but who find it difficult due to life circumstances. Not only will homeowners feel more pride in their homes, neighborhoods may experience more pride leading to improvement and benefit through raised property values.
Many individuals, churches and organizations in Huntington County support Habitat in its efforts to eliminate substandard housing. A Brush With Kindness is also a way for the local Habitat affiliate to give back to the community. Millard Fuller, founder of Habitat for Humanity said, “Everyone deserves a decent place to live.”
