On Saturday, June 25, a winner was drawn at random from over 600 entries for a chance to win the 2011 Habitat playhouse.
The winning ticket belonged to Kevin LeCavalier of Huntington. He, in turn, gave the playhouse to the Bartel family whose young children are very excited about the addition to their home.
The playhouse was on display at several locations around Huntington prior to its appearance as Huntington County Habitat for Humanity’s entry in the Heritage Days parade. Lake City Bank, Pace Auto, Bippus State Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, and Huntington Heating & Cooling each provided space for passersby to view the playhouse.
Purchase of materials for the playhouse was sponsored by the above-mentioned businesses plus Downtown Dental, Huntington University, Pathfinder Services’ Community Connections, First Farmers Bank, and Teachers Credit Union.
Five of Habitat’s core group of volunteers — John Bostel, Jerry Martin, Dick Wymer, Bill Lucker, and Steve Patterson — constructed the playhouse in sections that can be unbolted for easier transport. “Even then, the sections are pretty heavy for four men to carry,” said John, Habitat’s ReStore Manager and Construction Supervisor.
Funds raised from the sale of drawing tickets will help with the costs of construction of the next Habitat home at 1638 Jessup St. in Huntington. The groundbreaking ceremony, on Tuesday, July 19, at 12:00 noon, is open to the public. Union Church and the Habitat Board of Directors will provide a light lunch. Representatives from local government, Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority, and Habitat Indiana will be in attendance.
