Historical Society November Meeting

The November 15, 2011 General meeting of the Huntington County Historical Society will be held at the museum, beginning at 7:00 p.m.  Phyllis Fisher will present a program featuring her extensive collection of Currier and Ives.  Currier and Ives formed the successful printing firm whose lithographs were considered “appropriate for a proper home” by American Woman’s Home magazine in 1869.  Currier and Ives operated in New York City from 1834-1907, creating black and white lithographs from prints of fine artists.  Calling itself “the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints”, the firm published at least 7,500 lithographs.  At an affordable five to twenty cents for small works and $1.00 to $3.00 for larger ones, they became the most popular wall hangings of the day.  In recent times, those prints can be seen on dishes, tins, lamps, clocks, and numerous other decorative items.

Preceding the program, election of officers and members of the board of directors will be held, and the Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented.  Light refreshments will be served following the program.  The meeting is free and open to the public.
