The 13th annual "Old Fashioned Independence Day Celebration" will be held at the Forks of the Wabash Historic Park at 9:45 a.m. on Monday, July 4, 2011.  The program will feature music by the Erie Band and Company Singers.  The keynote address will be given by Dan McCain of Delphi, IN.  Retired from the USDA Soil Conservation Service, Dan devotes his time to his love of Wabash & Erie Canal history and his small farm beside the canal.  He is president of the Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Association, and a volunteer with Delphi Historic Trails.  Following the program, the public is invited to tour the historic buildings on the property.  In addition, the Forks of the Wabash is sponsoring a hog roast, and food will be available for a free will donation.

Two Huntington museums are collaborating to present the Independence Day program.  The Forks of the Wabash is one of the actual sites where Native American and European cultures met.  The park includes restored buildings from the mid-nineteenth century depicting the life style of the Miami Indians and the early settlers.  The Huntington County Historical Museum traces life in the county from prehistory up to the 21st century.  Visitors to the museum can learn about culture, business and industry, transportation, and school athletics.  Representatives from both museums will participate in the program.

The Erie Band, under the direction of Thaine Campbell, will present a brief concert of patriotic music beginning at 9:45 a.m.  The ceremony is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m.  The buildings at the Forks will be open from 11:00 until 1:00 p.m.  There is no entrance fee for the event, although a free will offering will be taken to be shared between the two museums.  It is recommended that those attending bring folding chairs or blankets since seating is limited.  The program will be in the outdoor pavilion.

The Forks of the Wabash Historic Park is located at the intersection of US 24 and SR 9 on the west side of Huntington, IN.
