Library to sponsor free origami workshop

Huntington City-Township Public Library invites both children and adults to attend one of two free Cranes for Kids origami workshops at the Main Library, 255 West Park Drive, Huntington. The first origami workshop will be held at 2 pm this Friday, April 8, and the second workshop will be offered at 3:30 pm on Friday, April 15. Anyone of any age can attend and learn to make two origami cranes - one to keep, and one to benefit the children of Japan affected by the recent earthquake and tsunamis. All materials and instruction will be provided and there is no cost to attend.
In Japanese culture, cranes are a powerful symbol of health and well-wishes, and it is commonly said that folding 1000 paper origami cranes makes a person's wish come true. During the workshop, the Children’s Department will tell the true story of Sadako Sasaki and the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, by Eleanor Coerr. Hiroshima-born Sadako is lively and athletic - the star of her school's running team, until she falls gravely ill with leukemia, an aftereffect of the atom bomb that fell on her city when she was only an infant. Sadako approaches her illness the way she did her running - with irrepressible spirit. Recalling the legend of the thousand paper cranes, Sadako sets to work folding paper cranes. This poignant story of one little girl’s courage and determination continues to inspire people around the world.
All origami cranes created to benefit the children of Japan will be sent to Cranes for Kids. OshKosh B’Gosh was inspired to create the Cranes for Kids benefit by the legend of the thousand origami cranes, and the company has invited the public to create and submit paper cranes. In exchange, OshKosh B’Gosh will donate up to 50,000 pieces of children's apparel to children in Japan – one for every crane made and submitted.
