Huntington City-Township Public Library presents Retracing Anne Frank’s Footsteps, a program offering a visual timeline of Anne Frank’s life, focusing on factors that make the Holocaust a unique genocide and distinct historical event, to be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 7 at the Main Library, 255 West Park Drive, Huntington.
Presenter Michelle Ball is a teacher at Pierceton Elementary School and a recipient of a 2010 Teacher Creativity Fellowship Grant from the Lilly Endowment. During the summer of 2010, Ball spent forty-seven days in Europe, studying Anne Frank’s life in depth, including researching World War II, the history of the Holocaust, and the history of the Jews in Europe since 1200 A.D. Since returning, Ball has continued her grant project by teaching programs to students, service clubs, and social organizations. All information Ball will present is based on research during her European travels, as well as personal interviews from Holocaust specialists and Holocaust survivors, and will include posters, photographs, and artifacts.
Anne Frank (1929-1945) was one of Adolf Hitler’s most famous victims. Anne, her parents, and older sister moved to the Netherlands from Germany after Adolf Hitler and the Nazis came to power there in 1933 and made life increasingly difficult for Jews. In 1942, Frank and her family went into hiding in a secret apartment behind her father's business in German-occupied Amsterdam. The Franks were discovered in 1944 and sent to concentration camps; only Anne's father survived.
Anne Frank’s diary of her family’s time in hiding, first published in 1947, has been translated into almost 60 languages and is one of the most widely read accounts of the Holocaust. Her story is a reminder of the value of freedom and of atrocities in history that must never be repeated.
This program is free and open to the public. Registration is not required to attend. For more information, please contact Huntington City-Township Public Library at 260-356-0824.
