2012 Fort Wayne Farm Show

 The 2012 Fort Wayne Farm Show will provide producers with an update on agriculture issues and the newest equipment and technology available to them. The show will be held Jan. 17 through Jan. 19 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

 

The farm show features both a trade show and daily educational sessions sponsored by Purdue Extension and the Northeastern Indiana Soil and Water Conservation Districts.  The trade show is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan 17, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan 18 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 19. 

 

            Note that educational programs begin each morning of the farm show at 10 a.m.  Session topics include outlook for grain and livestock markets, farm bill updates, and other ag economic topics.  There will also be sessions focused on small farms, alternative energy sources, and conservation cropping. 

 

During the Jan. 17 lunch program, Kent Yeager, Director of Public Policy for Indiana Farm Bureau, and Chuck Conner, President & CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, will interact with farmers.  The discussion will focus on state and federal ag policy.

 

Purdue agricultural economist Larry DeBoer will also present on the “Farm Bill / Ag Policy” topic on Jan. 18 at 10:00 a.m.  Chris Hurt, Purdue ag economist, will then present the 2012 Grain and Livestock Market Outlook on Jan. 18 at 1:00 p.m.

Land Lease Options" by Craig Dobbins, agricultural economist, Jan. 17, 2:30 p.m.

 

"Selecting a Livestock Enterprise for your Small Farm" by Mark Kepler, Purdue Extension Fulton County, Jan. 18, 2:30 p.m.

 

"Veggie GAPs: Growing Clean Produce" by Scott Monroe, Purdue Extension Daviess County, Jan. 18, 3:30 p.m.

 

“Numbers Behind the Forage Tests” by Elisa Berry, Purdue Extension DeKalb County, Jan. 18, 4:30 p.m.

 

"Living on the Land: Marketing What You Produce" by Steve Engleking, Purdue Extension LaGrange County, Jan. 18, 5:30 p.m.

 

"Alternative Energy Sources" by Chad Martin, Extension renewable energy specialist, Jan. 19, 12 p.m.

 

There also will be seminars by farmers and members of several Indiana agricultural service organizations, businesses and government agencies.

 

Purdue Extension will have a booth where attendees can interact with specialists and county educators.  Both youth and adults can also participate in an interactive game at the booth where they can win a prize.  New this year will be an opportunity for farmers to participate in the Purdue Tillage Survey.

 

"Purdue researchers will be recruiting a number of farmers who are using conventional tillage techniques to participate in a short survey about their tillage choices," Engleking said.

 

The survey, which takes 20-30 minutes to complete, will be conducted at the Purdue Extension booth. Participants will receive $20.
