Residents of Huntington County and surrounding areas who are licensed private pesticide applicators in Indiana are encouraged to attend a recertification training session on Thursday December 16. This session will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall at Hier’s Park in Huntington. Program registration will begin at 6:00 p.m.
A $10 fee is required for those who wish to obtain recertification credit for attending the program. Attendees who wish to obtain credit are reminded to bring their Indiana Private Pesticide Applicator license number with them. Please pre-register for the program by calling the Huntington County Extension Office by December 13.
Fred Whitford, coordinator of Purdue Pesticide Programs, will be presenting on the topic of “rules of the road” concerning Indiana Department of Transportation (DOT) and other state laws. Whitford has co-authored Purdue Extension publications relating to safely transporting farm equipment and products (including pesticides).
Whitford will be discussing farm tractors, implements of agriculture (ie. wagons and sprayers), and trailers/semi-trailers. One example of a question that might be asked by a farmer is if he needs brakes on his farm trailer. The quick answer to this question is, “It depends.” There are some exceptions to the general statement that Indiana state law requires equipment on the highway to have brakes. If the trailer is considered to be an implement of agriculture, then the answer might be “No.”
One publication co-authored by Whitford is called "Transporting Farm Equipment: What Growers Need to Know" (PPP-83). It is a guide to the laws governing agricultural implements and general utility trailers on the road. The book is available online at https://mdc.itap.purdue.edu/item.asp?item_number=PPP-83 or by contacting the Huntington County Extension office.
"Growers in the state of Indiana operate under a different set of rules than the commercial industries and the public," Whitford said. "It's important for Indiana growers to know those differences, including what constitutes an implement of agriculture and what tractors are allowed to pull."
