The YWCA Northeast Indiana’s shelter for victims of domestic violence will be getting new furniture and repainting thanks to a $20,000 donation from 1st Source Bank.

The 23-year-old building, located at an undisclosed Fort Wayne site to protect the safety of clients, served 680 women and children last year.

The new furniture and fresh paint will be in three heavily used areas. These include the family lounge, the admissions room -- where women arriving at the shelter first meet with a staff member -- and the women’s lounge.

“Our Crisis Shelter provides a safe environment, and these improvements will help make the shelter warmer and more home-like for the women and children who are struggling to stabilize their lives,” said Deborah Beckman, president/CEO of the YWCA Northeast Indiana, which serves Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Noble, Wells and Whitley counties.

Thirty-five years ago, the YWCA Northeast Indiana opened the first shelter in Indiana for domestic-violence victims. Today the YWCA operates a 24-hour hotline and provides comprehensive support for victims and survivors.

1st Source Bank is the largest locally controlled financial institution headquartered in the northern Indiana-southwestern Michigan area. Last year 1st Source Bank donated more than $840,000 to support education, social welfare and human service efforts, the arts, economic development and community organizations.
