YWCA News

The YWCA Northeast Indiana drew its fiscal year to a close and kicked off their new year during their annual meeting last night.  This is an exciting year for the YWCA, as they celebrate 35 years of providing domestic violence services.  During the meeting this year’s Peggy Hobbs Award recipient was recognized as well board members completing the terms and new board members and board officers were also installed..   

 

The Peggy Hobbs Service Award honors Mrs. Peggy Hobbs whose character, dedication, advocacy and support played an important role in guiding the YWCA through an era of great change, growth and even turmoil during the mid-70s. Each year the YWCA seeks nominations throughout Northeast Indiana for volunteers that demonstrate those characteristics that Peggy Hobbs utilized in her service to positively impact the YWCA and our community.  

 

Carol Durham is the recipient of the 2011 Peggy Hobbs Award.   Patricia Van Leuven, Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau nominated Carol for this prestigious award.  Carol’s volunteer service spans more than 50 years and across four states.  She is one of the founding Mothers of the Women’s Bureau and after 30 years is still actively involved with the agency.  

 

Lynne Gilmore was nominated by the American Heart Association as an empowering force to women and the community though her leadership, kindness, and courage. 

 

Dina Mansour-Cole was nominated by Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana for celebrating differences and sharing with girls that everyone has their own unique attributes which makes everyone special.

 

Dorie Sitko was nominated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana for her decades tirelessly work for the poor, the ill, and the oppressed and for young girls in need of the influence of a caring, wise and vibrant woman.

 

Tonya Wine was nominated by YWCA Northeast, Indiana as one that walks along side those in need, empowering them find their voice and change their lives.  Tonya’s passion for service enables her to draw others into the work of serving our community.

 

The YWCA thanks and recognizes those board members completing their board terms:  Kim Christmon, Amy Lazoff, Barbara Phillips, and Judy Roy.
