Guns Don't Kill, People Do

By Dean Beery on Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Editor,

Guns don’t kill, people do.  I understand the sentiment, but a gun makes it a lot easier and an assault gun with many rounds of ammunition has made too many massacres possible.

Let’s be honest here.  There are restrictions on guns now.  You can’t go out and buy a machine gun or a rocket propelled grenade for personal use... Read More...

Why I Will Vote Glenda Ritz

Why I Will Vote Glenda Ritz for State Superintendent of Public Instruction

For everyone interested in the election for State Superintendent, I want to answer one question before November 6th:

Why have I worked feverishly to support Glenda Ritz for State Superintendent of Public Instruction?

Current superintendent Tony Bennett’s agenda is a thinly-veiled attempt to allow private corporation take-over of public education... Read More...

iPad Concern Expressed

By a Huntington parent on Sunday, October 14th, 2012

Can a “21st Century Learning Initiative” Succeed Without Old-Fashioned Common Sense?

In the 19th century, young Hoosiers rarely ventured far from home.  Some went to school, when the family could afford it. Yet most of what a child learned to prepare them for adulthood would have been taught at home... Read More...

Before 2012 State of Education Speech

By Horace Mann on Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Tony Bennett is scheduled to give his third “State of Education” tomorrow night (Tuesday) in Indianapolis.

After he gave his first such speech in 2010, I wrote an article about data exaggerations he used in his speech.  I have reviewed the article from two years ago, and I believe it is appropriate to reprint it for you here as preparation for the speech tomorrow night and as part of the “hold Tony Bennett accountable plan” which culminates in the election on November 6th... Will voters understand?

By Horace Mann on Monday, September 10th, 2012

Will Republican Voters in Indiana Get Hoodwinked Again?

Tony Bennett is the Republican candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction in Indiana.  As an incumbent Republican in a conservative state, he’ll probably receive votes by default... Read More...

Land of Opportunity

By Dean Beery on Thursday, September 6th, 2012

What is happening to the “Land of Opportunity”?  The productivity of workers in the U.S. has steadily increased ever since the end of the Great Depression.  And for a long while wages increased with productivity.  Then, about the start of the Reagan administration, wages hit a plateau... ONE CONCERNED RESIDENT

By Lamont Neal on Saturday, April 28th, 2012

I AM WRITTING IN REFERENCE TO THE RECENT CUTS OF FIRE FIGHTERS AND OTHER JOBS IN HUNTINGTON. WHY ARE YOU CUTTING THESE JOBS AND OUR POLICE DEPARTMENT PERSONAL ARE DRIVING THEIR SQUAD CARS TO DEER HUNT. I HAVE WITNESSED THE SAME POLICE CAR FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS SITTING BY A WOODS WHEN GUN SEASON IS IN FOR DEER... Read More...

Expanded Education Opportunities

By Lamont Neal on Saturday, April 28th, 2012

The latest pamphlet mailed to citizens of our district by State Representative Dan Leonard make the same claims I refuted in March in an email I also shared here.  My email fell on deaf ears.

I am absolutely perplexed how Mr... Read More...

Patrick: School Board or Coroner?

By The Huntington Teacher on Thursday, April 26th, 2012

From the Journal Gazzette:

If Patrick makes it through the primary, he would have to step down as a member of the school board, so he jokingly suggests that all those dissatisfied with his work there go vote for him in May.

“The fastest way to get rid of me as president is to vote for me for coroner,” he said... Read More...

Working For Myself

By Submitted on Sunday, April 15th, 2012

Arrived home from school yesterday and like many days, it was later than I had planned or hoped.  A pile of laundry awaited, as did fixing supper.  Besides hoping to get in some quality time with family, I wondered if I'd have the energy to dive into the large stack of neglected papers needing graded late that night... Teaching Cursive – a Board Decision

Teaching Cursive – a Board Decision on Monday, February 27

Since the school administration eliminated teaching cursive, today’s third graders will graduate from high school and not be able to sign their name to a legal document. One of the main reasons given is there is not enough time in the school day to teach cursive... Read More...

Legislation SB 0400 and SB0123

By Jim Salway on Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Good afternoon,

I wish to state that I do not want any waters, potable or recreational, to be polluted. I support reasonable restrictions on my freedoms and reasonable actions to maintain a healthy and safe environment. If someone has a failing or failed on-site septic systems they should immediately correct that condition! In 1997 the US EPA and Congress issued a finding that private on-site septic systems that were properly sited, installed and maintained, provided homeowners a viable method to dispose of waste... Right to Work

By Dean Beery on Thursday, January 12th, 2012

I have a great idea for a new state law.  When we don’t like who has been elected or what they’ve done, we should be allowed to quit paying our state taxes.  Let’s call it the “Free citizen law”.  Has a nice ring doesn’t it?  We still get the roads, education, etc... Read More...

The Salvation Army Wish List

By Lamont Neal on Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

I would like to thank everyone in Huntington County for their support of The Salvation Army in Huntington County this year.  It is especially gratifying to see businesses and media groups endorsing us as agents of positive change in the community.

It is in that spirit that I take the liberty of presuming that the community would like to know what needs The Salvation Army has as it prepares for a new year of serving God and humanity... Read More...
