Perplexed over health care

By Rick Henly on Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Dear Editor,

I am perplexed; I have yet to hear how our government is going to control the cost of healthcare from the providers end; Hospitals, Doctors, Drug Companies, Medical Suppliers as well as Employers, who choose their employee' s coverage, and Insurance companies who administer it to the people... Thanks and farewell to the community

By Rick Henly on Friday, March 5th, 2010

Dear Editor,

Since January of 2003, it has been my honor to lead the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce as its president, said Robert “Bob” Brown. In that capacity I have had the honor to work side by side with the best that our community has to offer in all sectors. We have had successes such as the Super Wal-Mart, Peebles, and Erie-Haven Concrete just to name a few... Read More...

Not happy with the Herald-Press

By Rick Henly on Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Dear Editor,

I subscribe to the Herald Press-paying $117.00 year for a newspaper that is not quite 15 pages-including Sundays. I have decided after today I will no longer renew my subscription because practically every day it makes my stomach turn after reading the articles it contains.

For instance, Mayor Steve Updike thinks its okay to charge a trash collection fee, because our local government wasn’t wise enough to “share” information amongst each other to know how much it was in the debt... Read More...

Arts Initiative group sends thanks

By Rick Henly on Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Dear Editor,

Our wine tasting event, “Vino, Vittles and Vision,” had many purposes for us.  We hoped to make people aware of the Huntington Arts Initiative, we anticipated that we would raise some money to make repairs to the buildings, and we wanted to provide people with a fun-filled activity in downtown Huntington... TEA Party not just for Republicans

By Jeff Hoover on Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I am writing in regards to the article in the Herald Press about the TEA Party meeting on Feb. 12th.  It was mentioned that only Republican candidates spoke, implying that Democratic candidates were not welcome. That simply isn't true.  On our website, there is an invitation to any candidate who wants to speak to contact us to be put on the agenda... Legislators need to change priorities

By Rick Henly on Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Legislators at all levels are spending too much time fundraising.  I would like to see them more focused on issues like jobs, health care, energy and the environment.

The recent Supreme Court ruling unleashing the flood gates of corporate money into the mix is an additional disaster... Read More...

Insurmountable property tax problems?

By Rick Henly on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Dear Editor,

The problems as I see it concerning the property tax problems are almost insurmountable using the current methods to calculate values. The politicians that keep patting themselves on the back about how they are going to make the assessed values the basis for taxing our properties just don’t have a clue... Read More...

Are we ready for change?

By Rick Henly on Monday, February 1st, 2010

Dear Editor,

In Photo #1 are some US Coins minted the year my Dad was born, 1897.  He remembered as a young man in a lumbering camp being paid in coin, including gold.  There was poverty in those days—struggling 1st generation immigrants, unemployment due to periodic “hard times,” and so forth, but what can be looked back on as “honest poverty... County Assessor tells the facts

By Rick Henly on Friday, January 29th, 2010

Dear Editor;

- In 2006, trending was put into effect by the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF). A vendor was hired by County Commissioners thru a bidding process for trending. Trending figures were turned into both the Township Assessor & County Assessor. Parcels for the entire county total 23,000... Read More...

Parties offering illusion

By Rick Henly on Friday, January 29th, 2010

Dear Editor;

The two major parties offer only an illusion of health care debate, no choice; they are both conditioning people to think only in terms of governmental health care by leaving out any other possibility.  First: the Democrats cook up a communist scheme, then: the Republican Party “rescues” us by getting a “moderate” plan passed... Efficiency...not necessarily beneficial

By Jeff Hoover on Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Submitted by Brian W. Secor

When Congress under the Articles of Confederation, that union which preceded our current Constitutional government, took action to create the Northwest Territory in 1784, it did so with a commitment to representative government in which the people ruled... Read More...

Iron Triangle

By Jeff Hoover on Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Submitted by Cindy Gamrat

This week our United States Congress is passing government run health care, completely disregarding our Constitution and the majority of the citizens of this country. This happened with the “bailouts” and also with the “stimulus giveaway”... Read More...

Different place to look?

By Rick Henly on Thursday, December 17th, 2009

Dear Editor,

RE: Huntington City/County Fire Department:  Mr. Mayor, in an effort to get back on budget, furloughed a number of firefighters.  That move affects those who reside in rural Huntington Township, as well as those in the city.  Did some responsible representative of the county, buy into this action?  I suggest, the Mayor take a look at the city Police Department, including its 30-some police cars... Kudos to the choir!

By Rick Henly on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Dear Editor,

Tonight I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Huntington North High School Choir Christmas program.  It was wonderful.  The choice of music was fantastic and the soloists were exceptional.

We in Huntington are extremely fortunate to be able to listen to all this musical talent available at the high school... Read More...

Divisiveness over health care

By Jeff Hoover on Monday, December 7th, 2009

Submitted by Dean Beery

Why all the divisiveness over health care legislation?  Don’t we all want to be able to buy insurance, especially if we have a need for it (preexisting condition)?  None of us want our insurance to be dropped when we get sick and need it... Read More...
