Right to Work

By Dean Beery on Thursday, January 12th, 2012 | Bookmark and Share

I have a great idea for a new state law.  When we don’t like who has been elected or what they’ve done, we should be allowed to quit paying our state taxes.  Let’s call it the “Free citizen law”.  Has a nice ring doesn’t it?  We still get the roads, education, etc. and don’t have to pay for it.

Another great idea.  Let’s do the same thing in the workplace.  We’ll call it “Right to Work”.  I want to work in that place where the union has to represent all us workers and gets us good benefits.  The workers did vote for those representatives, but I don’t like unions so I shouldn’t have to pay them anything: Representation without taxation.  Where have I heard that before?

Wow, at first I thought you were making an analogy about the spoiled little brats at the state house that left so a vote couldn't be held. then, sir, your argument works. We elected these people to do a job. They are NOT doing it. If I just up and walked out of my job, I would be fired. As they should be. It's pretty obvious, that Unions breed lazy, greedy people. They want more for less always. If Unions were so great, why wouldn't people WANT to join the union. The unions are now scared they will lose membership. They will. They are a tired old horse now that should be put out to pasture. Unions were valuable in the 30's 40's and 50's. Then, greed took over. Now it is a cancer to the american dream. They are the number one reason jobs have left the USA. They outpriced themselves and their trades. Good riddance.

WOW, Herb, why so such hatred for unions...??
As long as YOU and businesses continue to view employees as liabilities instead of assets, people like you won't realize that every employee (including UNION workers) is a CUSTOMER to another business so cutting worker wages and benefits to increase tax free profits for stockholders is what has been destroying the economy for the past 20 years.

The "greed" you talk about can be placed at the foot of the business owners that sent the jobs out of Indiana and eventually to China where the workers make 35 cents an hour so the "stockholders" could continue to make money from other people's hard work.

Huntington used to be a hub of manufacturing 40 years ago, then one by one, companies moved to "right to work" states to break the unions, eventually, those same companies moved to Mexico, then China to maintain "profits".....

Walk down Jefferson street and look at the empty stores, pick up the paper and look at the houses for sale, Huntington is a dying town and it is not due to the "greed" of the union workers but the insistence that high profit margins were maintained for the owners......
so......without good paying jobs, tax revenues go down, services go down(trash collection, police & fire protection).....without customers.......small business fail.....

I agree that greed is the cancer that is destroying the American dream but it is NOT from the person that produced something but from those that profited from "other people's work"........

I don't remember saying they were liabilities. I said the unions caused the problem. Period. I used to live in Michigan. Union members used the membership as their "job security" instead of doing a good job as job security. Hence, breeding the laziness. I have worked in a "union" plant here in Indiana. The union did nothing but take my money, and use it for left causes that I do NOT agree with. They never backed me in issues with management. So much for dues helping the "worker". Ya, every few months, a district guy would show up in his nice car, and tell little fairy tales about what he was gonna do for "us". Sorry. That is BS. My father said that the best way to keep your job, is to DO your job. I have been done with the unions and their BS for quite a while.

RTW means right to freeload of the union workers.
the union has to represent the non-union worker if there is any confrontation between the non-union worker and the company. without having to pay for the representation instead the union workers have to pay for the non-union worker. Just like WELFARE! the Republicans are trying to shove socialism down your throat.
And anytime you don't want those union workers in your business or buying your product just hang a sign in your window that says "NO UNION MONEY NEEDED" we will eagerly accommodate your request and we also will be willing to free advertise for you "union workers do not spend your money at....."

UAW worker 9692 ? Do you really read what you type? Are you serious? Republicans forcing socialism down your throat? For the record, I DO NOT want unions representing me in the workplace. My work ethic is all I need to keep my job. If it is not enough for me to keep my job, then I should really work elsewhere. Union money is dirty anymore. It goes to causes I DO NOT believe in, so why should I support something I do not support? Keep drinking the Kool-aid at the union house pal, you are quite disillusioned. I will just hope you come to your senses soon.

Herb, lucky you...you get to keep YOUR job because of YOUR work ethic....at some places, the BEST work ethics are not enough and will not help anyone keep their job when management decides to screw its own employees. In this jobs economy, very few have the option of finding work elsewhere, let alone being able to sell their home, move to a different city, pay thousands in moving costs. I left Huntington in the 90's because of the lack of good paying jobs, I was fortunate enough to have the money to move, some equity in my home and grown kids.
The employeer that I worked for in the 90's, decided to sell the company and announced on a Friday that everyone could come back on Monday to see IF they still had a job. Everyone lost their seniority, sick time, pay rate, insurance benifits and started over. They were paid for their vacations but had to wait until the next year for any vacation time off. The owner (seller) walked away with a pocket full of cash while the employees got a hand-full of peanuts and the company is now gone because the new owners were looking for a tax write-off. A union contract would have protected the workers so before you spout off about union BS, remember, it could happen to YOU....then where would you turn???.....and who would you blame??

Greg posted on January 24th, 2012 @ 08:34:55

I would blame the unions for making labor costs so expensive. Period.

I agree with Greg. The union pays my husbands pension. If it were up to the company he worked for, I'm sure they would see to it that there was no pension. As for the company that I worked for...there were a lot of hard working dedicaded people with good work ethics that were let go, just because the company decided one day that their son, daughter or some realitive was needing a job, so they get rid of a really good worker so that they could have a good paying job..bs. A good union would have put a stop to that bs. And a 401K, is only as good as the market that you happen to pick and how the stock market is at the time you cash it in..might be good and it might not. I speak from experience on that one. So, Herb, some union reps roll in money (just like the CEO's), but they also help when it come to your job security and retirement.
