Vikings fall to Quakers

For five and a half innings it looked like the Lady Vikings were on their way to a state title. Erin Rethlake was on the mound and cruising. She had walked the first batter of the game and had an error fielding a tapper back to the mound but hadn’t allowed a hit or anyone past second base in the first five innings.

Peyton Pike had picked up the first hit of the game and the Vikings offense was doing it part and putting the ball in play. In the top of the fourth Rethlake double off the right field fence and two batters later Alyssa Hiple ripped a double to left scoring Erica Friese who was pinch running for Rethlake. The Vikings had their lead and looked to be on their way to a State Title but Plainfield wasn’t going away.

The Quakers hadn’t been close to Rehtlake all day and when a Quaker drew a walk to start the sixth no one was worried. Then the Quakers short stop singled to left and Plainfield had first and second with no outs. After a Viking error on a squibber down the third baseline the crowd for the Quakers erupted as the bases were loaded and the Vikings were in trouble.

The Quakers got on a the board on a full count pitch that just missed on the outside for ball four and like that the game was tied 1-1 on a walk. A ball in the dirt got by the catcher and after a collision with Rethlake at the plate the Quakers were up 2-1. A failed pickoff attempt at second and all the sudden the Vikings were down 3-1 without the Quakers ever driving in a run. The Vikings couldn’t mount a rally in the seventh and the Viking run ended at the State finals 1-3.

The Viking offense ended with 1 run on five hits while Rethlake and the defense gave up 3 runs on 1 hit, three walks and 2 errors. Congratulations to the Lady Vikings on a great run.
