Huntington Lady Eagles

The Huntington Lady Eagles participated in the Fort Wayne Guard Invitational Saturday played at the Spiece Fieldhouse in Fort Wayne.  The Eagles won three games on the day to bring home the first place trophy.  “This was definitely the hardest tournament yet at the Invitational.  We played three quality teams in less than 7 hours.  Nobody had anything left when that final buzzer went.” Coach Shultz said.

The Eagles defeated the Lima Heat in the opening game 58-53.  They used a 23-12 advantage in the third period to secure the win.  Catherine Weaver scored 32 points and Jenna Cleveland pitched in 14 for the Eagles.

In the second contest the Eagles got past the Northwest Ohio Cougars 58-54.  They found themselves down six at the half but used a big third quarter again outscoring the Cougars 22-8.  Coach Nan Yarde noted, “I don’t know what it is about the third quarter but we seem to own it.  We have consistently played very well coming out of halftime.”  The Eagles were led by Catherine Weaver with 23 points and Abby Ballinger scoring 14.  Ballinger was 7-9 on the game shooting 78%.

In the final game against the Ft. Wayne Hurricanes neither team had much left in their tanks.  Both teams expended too much energy just getting to the finals.  Huntington won the contest 40-37 for their third win over the Hurricanes this season.  Earlier games were won by 1 point and 6 points in overtime.  Fans have come to expect a close contest between the two long time rivals.  The Lady Eagles were again led by Catherine Weaver with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Jenna Cleveland added 12 with Abby Ballinger scoring 8.

Catherine Weaver was place on the All-Tournament team voted on by the Coaches.  Claire Wunderlich from the Ft. Wayne Hurricanes also made the team.  The wins move the Eagles record to 21-2.  They next see action against the WACHE Warriors next Saturday at Salamonie School in Warren.
