Wildcats cruise to lopsided win

It was a game No. 21 Huntington would rather forget as the top-ranked Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan University (23-2, 12-1) manhandled the Foresters on their way to a lopsided 62-30 win at Luckey Arena.
Ranked as the top defensive team in NAIA Division II, the Wildcats lived up to their reputation by holding HU to a season-low 30 points on 18.2% shooting (6-for-33). IWU currently leads the nation in scoring defense per game at 49.2 ppg.
In addition to their defensive prowess, the Wildcats have also established themselves as a well-oiled machine on the other end of the court where they knock down an NAIA Division II best .479 percent of their shots and Wednesday night was no different as they went 22-for-48 for 45.8 percent.
This one-two punch left the visiting Foresters reeling as the Wildcats dominated play from opening tip-off and never looked back. After jumping in front 12-2 within the first three and a half minutes of the contest, IWU delivered blow after blow to double up the score at 33-16 by halftime.
Things didn’t get any better for HU in the second stanza as the Wildcats’ relentless defense allowed only one field goal in the final twenty minutes. The Foresters managed 14 points in the second half, 12 of which came at the charity stripe, while the Wildcats tallied 29 second half points to extend their lead to 32 by game’s end.
Lauren Meese topped the Foresters with nine points and three steals while Kelsey Green grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Paige Smith finished with a double double of 13 points and a game-high ten rebounds to pace IWU. Rachel Steinbarger also tossed in 13 points and Krystal Stoneking added 10.
With this loss, the Foresters drop to 15-8, 7-6 in the MCC. HU will look to get back on track Saturday when they square-off with Mount Vernon Nazarene University at 1:00 p.m.
