The Huntington North Boy’s Cross-Country team was in a league of its own at the Blackford Invitational on Saturday. Both the Varsity and JV squads came away with dominating wins, scoring 35 and 18 points respectively. On top of the team success, both Ross Ochs and Darius Vogleman each had great individual success by winning the Varsity and JV races respectively. Ross Ochs pulled away from teammate Josh Graham (3rd, 16:13), and Semi-state rival Nathan Hendershot (2nd, 15:56), just after the mile mark, and he never looked back. Ochs went on to win the race with a very impressive personal record (PR) of 15:41. With Ochs new PR, he became the second fastest runner in Huntington North history.
Along with Ochs’ PR, 15 of the Vikings 25 runners recorded personal bests or season bests at Saturday’s race. With all of the PR’s set on Saturday, it is not surprising that the varsity squad recorded the 7th fastest combined team time in school history (88:28.63, or 16:29 average per runner). In order to record such a great team time it took a special group effort from the Vikings 3rd-6th runners, who worked together for almost the entire race. That group included Austin Roberts (8th, 16:43), Sam Doughty (10th, 16:53), Kaylan Newcomb (13th, 16:56), and Jake Crosley (15th, 17:01). The final varsity runner was Cordell Lewis, who placed 28th with his time of 17:29. Click on the interview video below to hear Coach Curtis Hines talk about the many accomplishments of his runners on Saturday.
The second place team on Saturday was West Noble with 65 points. Rounding out the top five teams were Pendleton Heights (3rd, 68 points), Delta (4th, 164 points), and Muncie Southside (5th, 165 points).
The Vikings next race is Saturday, September 19th at the very competitive Flashrock Invitational. The race is held at the Northview Christian Church in Carmel, and it is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
