The Richmond Red Devils were in town and a normal Friday night Football turned pink on senior night at Kriegbaum field on Friday night October 7th 2011. The Vikings were honoring their seniors and wearing pink to honor a greater cause.
The big plays started early as the Vikings were punting the ball away.
The Vikings Austin Piedmont timed it perfectly and hit the Red Devil return man right as he was catching the ball forcing the fumble that Levi Lawson recovered on the Red Devil 18 yard line.
The Vikings Drew Schnitz would later connect with Zach Geotz on the 12 yard touchdown pass putting the Vikings up 7-0 with 3:15 left in the first.
The game then started to resemble a shootout as both teams offenses started heating up. Richmond would tie it up at 7 on a two yard td run with 9:47 to go in the 2nd quarter. Viking quarterback Reid Fawcett would then connect with Geotz on a 23 yard touchdown pass putting the Vikings back on top 14-7 with 6:31 to go in the half.
The next six and a half minutes would see the scoreboard lit up as Richmond would tie it up at 14 with a 17 yard touchdown run with 3:35 left. The Vikings Cody Frazier would then go to work breaking a 60 yard touchdown run up the middle to put the Vikings up 21:14 with 2:42 left in the half. The Red Devils would come right back and tie it up with :32 still left but not to be outdone Frazier would take the handoff on the first play after the kickoff and go for 79 yards and the td to put the Vikings up 28-21 at the half.
The Viking offense would pick up where it left off and on the first series Fawcett would connect with Geotz again for a 36 yard touchdown pass and the Vikings were up 35-21 with 9:51 in the 3rd. The Vikings were now up by two scores and according to Coach Gilg this allowed the coaching staff to turn the pass rush loose.
The Viking kick coverage and defense would set up the next touchdown as the Andrew Cole kick would pin the Red Devils at their own 12. The defense would hold and force the 3 and out and the Vikings would get the ball back at midfield after the punt. After a couple of penalties the Vikings Brock Gower would break off the 57 yard touchdown run to put the Vikings up 42-21 with 8:10 left in the 3rd.
The Viking Defense would force another 3 and out. The Vikings Cody Frazier would cap the ensuing drive with a 5 yard run putting the Vikings up 49-21 with 5:04 left in the 3rd. Cody would have 239 yards on the night.
Richmond would close the gap to 49-28 with a 17 yard touchdown still in the third but it would not be enough. Fawcett’s turn at quarterback would end in a 2 yard touchdown run on fourth down to put the Vikings up 56-28 with 11:12 to go in the game.
The Viking defense would come up with another big stop giving the Viking offense the ball back at their 16 yard line with a little over 8 minutes to go in the game.
The next Viking drive would run out the clock as the Vikings took the ball down the field. Quarteback Drew Schnits had two nice runs for first downs one on third and long and the second on fourth and 11 to keep the clock moving leading to the final score Vikings 56 Richmond 28.
The Vikings improved to 4-4 on the season and 4-2 in the North Central Conference. Next week the wrap up the regular season with a trip to New Castle.
