Back-to-back PKs doom Foresters

Rain didn't stop the MCC battle between the Forester men's soccer team and Spring Arbor University as the Cougars came away with the 3-1 road win on Tuesday afternoon.

After an evenly matched first half in which neither team scored, Spring Arbor found an empty net eight minutes into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. HU answered 13 minutes later when Tyler Holbein played a bent ball between two defenders into Todd Canal who riffled it home to knot the score at 1-1.

The Foresters' celebration was short-lived as the wheels came off 60 seconds later when the Cougars drew a foul in the box and capitalized on a penalty kick to take a 2-1 advantage. Twenty minutes later it was déjà vu as the Cougars scored on another penalty kick to cruise to the 3-1 victory.

HU generated 12 shots, five on goal, compared to the Cougars’ 23 shots with ten on goal. Drew Mattingly assumed keeper responsibilities and finished with seven saves.

The Foresters (4-11-1, 2-6) are in a must win situation on Saturday when they go head-to-head with Saint Francis for the final spot in the MCC tournament.
