Pilots grab 5-3 road win over HU

Up against a talented Bethel College squad, the Forester men’s soccer team scored three goals but it wouldn’t be enough as the Pilots found the back of the net five times to hand the Foresters their fourth MCC loss of the season.

It was a match of scoring frenzies as Bethel scored their first two goals within a four-minute span to take a 2-0 lead by the 15-minute mark. The Foresters responded less than two minutes later when Adam Christner found an empty net on a slotted ball from Kyle Geiss to close within one.

The Pilots scored two more goals to take a 4-1 lead by the 56th minute but the game was far from over as three more goals were scored in a two-minute span to keep things exciting. Joe Brenneman started the scoring rampage by netting his first collegiate goal on an assist from Geiss in the 79th minute.  Less than a minute later both teams had traded goals to cap off the scoring run. HU’s final goal came from the foot of Todd Canal on an assist from James Parker.

“I feel like we gifted them three goals today, and you just can’t do that against a quality team like Bethel,” commented Coach Lawson. “I was proud of our guys for fighting back. I thought our bench played well and gave us some much needed energy. Our offense continues to be productive but we have to play both sides of the ball in order to be successful.”

Bethel outshot the Foresters 25-11. Drew Mattingly and Chris Fox split goalie responsibilities and finished with five and four saves respectively.

With this loss, HU drops to 4-9-1, 2-4 in MCC play. They face top-seeded Taylor University on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
