Former Vike Kicks off Track Season

The Western Kentucky University track and field team kicked off the 2011-12 indoor season Saturday at the Murphy Center, competing against Lipscomb, Tennessee State, and host Middle Tennessee in the Christmas Invitational.  Former Viking Travis Gerding assisted the Hilltoppers.

 

The men and women combined to win nine events on the day, led by Monteka Flowers, who brought home the victory in sweeping the shot and weight. In the shot, she won with a put of 44-4.75 and she won the weight throw with a toss of 60-0.50.

 

Karleigh Parker won the women's pole vault with a clearance of 11-6.25, which moves her to second all-time in the Lady Topper history books in her very first meet.

 

On the track, Michelle Finn won the women's mile with a time of 5:13.56. Marcus Winstead led a one-two finish for WKU in the men's 400-meter dash, clocking a time of 49.38. Kyle Chettleburgh won the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:37.33.

 

WKU also swept the men's throwing events, with Houston Croney taking the victory in the weight with a toss of 56-2.50 and Brad Wright setting a new personal best with a winning shot put of 49-9.

 

The men's mile-relay team of Karlis Daube, Winstead, Cailean Robinson and Marcus Pope won the event in a time of 3:21.99.

 

Second- and third-place finishers for the Lady Toppers: Allison Riedling (2nd, 3,000m - 10:53.85); Madison Hale (3rd, 3,000m - 10:56.95); Ashley Chervinko (2nd, shot - 41-2.50 / 3rd, weight - 49-11.75); Adesola Adeduro (2nd, weight - 54-4.75).

 

Second- and third-place finishers for the Hilltoppers: Robinson (t-2nd, 55m - 6.44); Derrius Brooks (t-2nd, 55m - 6.44); Pope (2nd, 400m - 49.48); Croney (2nd, shot - 46-3.25); Travis Gerding (3rd, shot - 45-5.25 / 3rd, weight - 48-8.75); Wright (2nd, weight - 55-2).

 

The teams will break for the Holidays, returning for the first team competition January 12-13 at the UAB Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
